Episode 12: Sofia’s Choice
Tuesday, January 16th, 2007Air date: 1/11/07
This was a fantastic episode that proved even a comedy can deliver twists to shock it’s audience.
Wilhelmina’s storyline started with her being romanced by Texan Ted, causing her to return from holiday with a bounce in her step, a softness to her voice, and cowboy (cowgirl?) boots on her feet. She unfired one employee (let go at the office Christmas party, in true Wilhelmina style) and placed a stuffed armadillo on a shelf, causing her assistant Marc to immediately question her mental status. She continued her trend of sweet behavior until Ted essentially dumped her to return to his wife. Wilhelmina returned to
Mode wearing all white, removed the armadillo from her office, and reclaimed her role as the heartless executive, vying to become the editor-in-chief of Mode.
Meanwhile, Sophia cries on Betty’s shoulder over her fear that Daniel is freezing up and not going to propose to her after all. This, of course, prompts Betty to give Daniel a nudge in that direction, as he plans a dinner where Sophia meets his parents. Betty discovers that Sophia had ulterior motives for her relationship with Daniel as she uncovers the plot to get him to propose to her in 60 days. Betty tries to warn Daniel before Sophia reveals her conquest on national television, but she fails as the world gets to see Daniel Meade get his heart broken, live.
Betty informs Sophia that, contrary to her opinion, they are nothing alike as she quits her newly acquired position at Sophia’s magazine. As Betty runs to try to find Daniel to make sure he is okay, he disappears into the sunset with his broken heart.
Favorite Scene: Betty in the strip-club looking for Hunter. The Captain Jack Sparrow stripper that was trying to dance with her when she first walked in was cracking me up. And Hunter’s follow-up strip sample show was flawlessly performed. Christina’s enthusiasm and claim she was in for “the long haul” completed the scene perfectly.
