Episode 23: East Side Story Recap
The season finale of Ugly Betty was full of a lot of shocking moments. Some I saw coming and some were out of left field. Season one of Ugly Betty wrapped up with some huge moments. A jail break out, a new life is created, and a popular character is apparently killed off in the darkest and most bittersweet episode from the series yet.
Betty has decided to fight for Henry and she leaves him a voice message in the office telling him she really needs to talk to him. When Daniel comes in trying to hide his face Betty gives him his present from Mexico. A Mystic Rock that will help him on his journey of enlightenment. When she sees his black eye (which he has not so cleverly covered in makeup) Daniel lies and tells her he banged his face against a rock when he was rescuing a drowning girl scout in Central Park. An impressed Betty gives him the Sombrero that she bought for Henry.
Wilhelmina is lying in bed when Bradford places a small box on the pillow beside her. Of course it’s an engagement ring which Bradford designed him self in the shape of a blooming flower to represent their blooming love. She accepts of course and privately makes a face of disgust at Bradford’s hideous ring.
Bradford’s current wife Claire knows that Wilhelmina is behind Bradford’s sudden withdrawal from her. He’s stopped taking her calls and had the divorce papers delivered. But she, Yoga and two other inmates have a plan to bust out of the big house and get Claire face to face with her cheating husband. The key to the plan is Sugar-Free Shirley. Claire and the members of her “gang” pass a candy bar to Sugar-Free Shirley a diabetic and tell her she will get $50,000 placed in her daughter’s bank account for eating the candy and going into diabetic shock while being transported upstate tomorrow.
Alexis is already panicking after paying Mr. Wolf to kill her father and she calls him to find out when the situation when happen. He tells her it will happen when it happens and not to contact him again. When the phone call is over Betty walks in and tells Alexis about Daniel’s heroic deed.
Alexis knows Daniel is lying since she was the one who actually saved a drowning kid in Central Park when they were teens. So she suggests Betty arrange a press conference to “reward” Daniel for his heroism.
Daniel is still popping pills in his office when Betty comes in. He lies again and tells her their mints. She sees Henry at her desk and asks for a mint but of course Daniel tells her she doesn’t need one. Betty looking for somewhere private to talk with Henry takes him to the copier room.
A newly determined Betty tells Henry that in love you rarely ever get what you want but if you don’t fight for it you have even less of a chance. She tells Henry she is fighting for him and thinks they would be amazing together and he makes her mouth go dry every time he walks into a room.
Betty is expecting Henry to turn her down but he tells her he broke up with Charlie because she was not the one for him and she makes his mouth go dry too. They make their first date but don’t get to kiss since thanks to Amanda telling everyone what was going on they now have a crowd outside the door to the copier room. A happy Betty bumps the copier and takes a picture of her shining face.
Betty goes to get her teeth cleaned before her first date with Henry and meets with the orthodontist technician Diane. Diane is very talkative and giving to flights of fancy into romantic comedies. She thinks Betty and Henry’s story is so romantic and agrees to clean her teeth even though her assistant points out that Betty has just got them cleaned several months ago and her insurance won’t cover it. Betty also has a cavity but says she will come back tomorrow because if her lips are going to tingle tonight she wants it to be because of Henry.
Justin seems pretty confident that something will happen to Joey (the boy who he is understudy to in his schools production of West Side Story). He asks Hilda to help him run lines but she is busy with Santos making wedding arrangements.
Wilhelmina is also busy making elaborate wedding plans, which includes booking St. Patrick’s Cathedral for June 16th. Marc comes to tell her that Mode’s biggest advertiser Fabia has already booked the cathedral and of course they can’t bump her. To make matter worse Elton John is rewriting Candle in the Wind for her, which he had already agreed to rewrite for Wilhelmina. Wilhelmina arranges a meeting…
Fabia shows up with an all new set of boobs and flaunting the picture of her intended. An old man she has to marry before his kids cut her out of the will. Wilhelmina cuts to the chase and asks Fabia what does she want in exchange for giving up St. Patrick’s Day Cathedral and Elton John. Surprisingly the answer is Marc!
Betty arranges Daniel a surprise press meeting complete with a bunch of girl scouts and journalist. Alexis shows up and begins to question Daniel about how he saved the girl scout and reveals the major holes in his story. A humiliated Daniel confess the truth to Betty who tells Daniel he is just using drugs to avoid his problems in place of sex and tells him this time she is way past disappointed.
Betty is trying to cook dinner for Henry as she talks to Ignacio in Mexico for cooking advice. She’s worried that he will hate her meal since she is substituting a lot of ingredients. Ignacio reassures Betty that Henry already loves her and she has nothing to worry about. When the door bell rings Betty thinks Henry has arrived early but it’s Charlie with a surprise of her own. She’s pregnant and leaving for Tucson tomorrow! When Henry arrives (with flowers for Betty) he goes off to talk with Charlie who is happy she got to ruin their date.
Justin tells Hilda that Joey has come down with an allergic reaction from eating walnuts in chicken salad; specifically walnuts in Justin’s chicken salad when he and Joey swapped their lunches. Hilda begins to wonder if Justin could have possibly arranged the reaction on purpose but dismisses it.
An upset Betty is devouring a box of chocolates as she talks to Christina and wonders about Henry. Henry sends a text message to Betty asking to talk. She goes to meet him. As she does Amanda comes out of the love dungeon and Christina notices that she seems to have appeared out of nowhere. Amanda who wants to keep the room secret from everyone but Marc tries to play it off but she accidentally opens the door to the secret room again. Both Christina and Amanda go back in the room and get locked in when the door jams shut.
Bradford announces to Daniel that he is leaving Claire. A shocked Daniel can not understand why Bradford could leave his wife of 38 years when she needs him the most to be alone. Bradford tells Daniel he won’t be alone he has found someone who loves him and he would be a fool to pass that up, it’s Wilhelmina, who tells Daniel to call her mommy!

Henry tells Betty he’s leaving tonight a disappointed Betty tells Henry she understands but for one day she though they were finally going to be together and she was happy. Henry tells her he was happy too and tells Betty that he wants her to have a wonderful life because she deserves it. The two kiss good bye and Henry walks away!
Marc is now the newest member of Fabia’s entourage and he is present at Fabia’s meeting for her cosmetics layout. Apparently being a member of her entourage means Marc has to dress in all black, wear his hair slicked back and she calls him Marco. While in a meeting with Wilhelmina Fabia orders Marc to clean up after her dog has an accident, when the meeting is over Wilhelmina goes over to talk to him.
He tells her that Fabia is making him smoke, eat pasta and is using him as a human guinea pig for her cosmetics. He tells Wilhelmina that he hopes it was all worth it as he leaves the room and Wilhelmina stays behind to reminisce about their good times together in a series of flashbacks.

An obviously high Daniel goes to visit Alexis and announces that he has quit since there is now nothing left for him at Mode. He tells her he has no one to turn to, when she points out he’s impaired he gets angry and tells her to just admit that she hates him. Daniel confesses to Alexis that he never hated her, and when she was dead every Sunday he used to go and visit her grave. He announces that he still feels like going to visit her grave sometimes since he still misses her.

When Betty tells her Henry’s girlfriend is named Charlie the overly talkative Diane announces that Dr. Farkas is dating a girl named Charlie too. A cute red haired girl, who makes her own jewelry and the two have been dating for over two months now. Betty connects the dots and realizes that she introduced them at Henry’s birthday party two months ago and that Charlie has been two timing Henry for quite some time and the baby might not be Henry’s.
Betty leaves an urgent message to Henry but gets not response. Diane tells Betty that Resse Witherspoon or Drew Barrymore would be half-way to the airport by now to stop the plane and declare their love for their man. She tells Betty this is her movie and her chance for a happy ending. Betty rushes out then comes right back when she realizes that she has Justin’s show tonight, and has no way of knowing which plane Henry is. Still in romantic comedy mode Diane screams Drew Barrymore and Betty rushes off!
